The Boom or Bust National Scenic Byway is the perfect road trip for those who don’t necessarily want to plan every aspect of their days. When driving along the byway, you’ll be navigating through small towns and villages in parishes across Northwest Louisiana such as, Caddo, Bossier, Claiborne, and Webster.
You’ll pass through spots like Robert L. Nance Park in Hosston, or Earl G. Williamson Park in Oil City, both recently renovated with playgrounds, updated facilities, scenic walking trials, boat launches, and more. Or, depending on when you go, in July you might catch the Sunflower festival in Gilliam. You may even stop for some lunch at J & A Café or Chavos Mexican Restaurant in Vivian.
There is no right or wrong way to do the byway, and that’s the fun part. Your adventure can begin when you’re welcomed into each town with new, giant gateway signs. Each sign has a QR code that becomes your guide for your next stop, leaving just enough room to wander, explore, and find your own version of the drive. With one quick scan, visitors will be able to dive deeper into local shops, attractions, restaurants, and hidden gems across the region.
Commissioned through a 2023 regional artist call, these laser-cut, metal sculptures were designed by Northwest Louisiana artists. From sunflower fields and bayous to pine forests and oil derricks, each piece was carefully crafted to reflect the unique stories and heritage of the community it represents. Plus they make great photo-ops.
Early summertime is one of the most magical times to take this trip along the Boom or Bust National Scenic Byway and stay at a luxury cabin on the lake, a restored Conestoga Wagon on a hillside, OR a former fire station turned Airbnb.
Not sure where your adventure begins? Discover antique shops, hometown restaurants serving regional favorites, and cultural landmarks that capture the spirit of each community, here. Or try out this three-day itinerary through Caddo & Bossier Parishes!
