From my personal experience, the Boom or Bust Byway is the ultimate getaway. I travel the byway to get away from the city’s commotion, everyday routine, and modern day struggles of connectivity. A road trip on the byway is the perfect low-budget getaway to experience before summer ends. Whether you explore this route solo or with friends, here are 6 things to have in mind before hitting the byway:

The byway itinerary is not a straightened arrow drive, but the establishments along the byway are locally owned and operated in very small towns, so it’s best to research your designated stops prior to driving the byway. Take the road that speaks to you within that moment, but don’t miss out on an experience because you didn’t plan accordingly.

At most restaurants and attractions, cash is the only payment for food or services. One of my favorite places to eat on the byway is Rascal’s Restaurant in Vivian. It’s a combination of country cooking and soul food with traditional, genuine, Southern hospitality. It’s worth a quick ATM stop.
5. …But first, sunscreen!Driving with your windows down, picnicking on a pier, frolicking through the fields at Dixie Maze Farms, and other outdoor activities require sunscreen. The sun seems to peak through the byway clouds with ease, so be sure tosnag the nearest SPF cream. You’ll thank me later.
There is minimal cell reception on the Boom or Bust Byway. Embrace it!
