Free event will feature sunflower trail, live music, arts and crafts vendors, and more
GILLIAM, LA – The 20th Annual Sunflower Trail and Festival will take place, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, June 16 at Red River Crossroads Museum, 12797 Main St. in Gilliam. The festival will feature a scenic sunflower trail, sunflower picking, arts and crafts, live entertainment, art exhibits, children’s activities, a sunflower photography contest, and more. New to this year’s festival is the Sunflower Festival Treasure Hunt, which offers participants a chance to win $300. A week before the festival, treasure hunt clues will be posted on their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/SunflowerTrail. Admission is free.
“Festivalgoers love the small town family atmosphere, the simplicity of driving the country roads and walking through the sunflowers,” said Karen Logan, event organizer for the Sunflower Trail and Festival.
Food and refreshment vendors will be available at the festival, and lunch is available for purchase at Main Street Restaurant and Adger’s Store, as well as The Wild Petunia and D&I General Store in Belcher.
Live music will be performed in downtown Gilliam behind the library on Main Street. The bands headlining this year’s festival are AJ and Two Tone Blues, along with The Offerings.
To drive the Sunflower Trail, turn right at Old Dixie Gin and Sentell Road and drive the loop around the levee. Sentell Road circles back to Highway 3049 at Cornerstone Baptist Church, just north of Dixie. This scenic drive features several sunflower varieties and wildflower fields. Sunflowers along the trail are expected to be in full bloom. The sunflowers bloom in mid-June, and last for a month.
